On Wednesday 20th November the Rotary Club of Banstead held the Young Chef Competition at the Beacon School. This year there were seven competitors and the standard was high as usual. The teacher in charge was Mrs. R. Wellburn. The winning meal was cooked by Georgia Ruthnum and consisted of prawns in garlic sauce, followed by chorizo, chick peas and spinach stew, followed by a dessert of custard tart. The runner up was Amelia Devlin whose started was grilled hallami on a bed of spinach and mini salad, drizzzled with home made sweet and sour sauce. The main course was salmon with lemon butter sauce served with fresh asparagus and garlic roast potatoes while the dessert was warm banana cake with home made custard. The judge was Andrew Cousens the main chef from Cuddington Golf Club, who has been our judge on several occasions and always does this well, tasting the offerings and giving helpful advice to the contestants.
The photo shows John Draper the Rotary President in the centre next to Andrew Cousens on his right, with runner up Ameila Devin in the striped apron next to him and Georgia Ruthrum is the girl on the extreme right, with the teacher, Mrs. R. Wellburn just behind her with the blonde hair.
All the meals looked good and it was a good competition with four boys and three girls taking part.
