East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services - A talk by Carmen Singer

Carmen Lambert Singer, friend of several Rotary groups, has worked as a police officer for 20 years in Surrey and Metropolitan Police and is heading to teacher training this year. She presented her talk on Domestic Abuse on behalf of The East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service for whom she now volunteers whilst working at a secondary school. It's the only crime that both suspect and victim end up going home together and three women die at the hands of partners and ex partners every fortnight. We learned how to recognize domestic abuse, how to help someone who might be suffering and what signs to look out for.

Most importantly Carmen enabled all of us to challenge the stereotypes of perpetrators and survivors and re-evaluate the relationships around us and understand the risks that survivors take in taking the decision to leave or even make that first phone call for help.
